Welcome to the Washington County Kids Community! This is a space where we dream big, collaborate, and create brighter futures for our youth. To keep this playground of ideas safe, supportive, and fun, here are some simple guidelines we can all follow:

Kindness is the glue that holds our community together. Treat every member with respect, even when opinions differ. Remember, we’re all here for the same goal—supporting kids and creating opportunities.

2. Keep It Positive and Constructive 🌈

Every idea, question, or suggestion helps us grow! Share your thoughts in a way that uplifts others and moves the mission forward. No need to rain on anyone’s parade—this is a sunshine-only zone! ☀️

Kids deserve a safe space, and so do we. Don’t share personal or sensitive information about others (or yourself). What happens in the sandbox, stays in the sandbox.

This community thrives on your involvement. Jump into discussions, share your expertise, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Collaboration is like a group project—only way more fun!

Our focus is supporting early childhood, after-school, and summer programs. Let’s keep conversations relevant to our goals. While we love a good joke or story, let’s make sure it helps the kids win the day.

This is a safe zone for everyone. Harassment, discrimination, or negativity won’t be tolerated. Let’s build a world where every kid—and community member—feels valued.

The Challenge: Remove Barriers to Enrichment Activities

In Washington County, countless youth miss out on vital afterschool and summer enrichment programs that could shape their futures. These gaps in access hinder their development and limit their potential. We understand how crucial these activities are for every child's growth and
learning journey.

Without proper support, afterschool providers of all sizes can struggle to offer enough enrichment programs to engage youth across the county. This lack of resources not only affects the providers but also diminishes the opportunities available to children in our community, perpetuating cycles of disadvantage.

A professional membership association designed specifically for those dedicated to enriching the lives of youth during Out-of-School-Time! With Washington County Kids as your trusted partner, we are committed to equipping you with the tools you need to thrive.

Washington County Kids hosted the Out-of-School-Time (OST) Summit on April 4, 2025, bringing together dozens of educators, parents, youth, community leaders, and OST professionals for a powerful day of collaboration and visioning.

Each grantee is required to partner with a community based organization so providers are encouraged to work with their local school district.  An Advisory Council will be organized by ODE for future planning.  SB 896 related to afterschool funding is currently in the Ways &amp; Means committee and may receive some funding but final decisions may not be made until the end of the legislative session.</p>

Do you ever ask yourself: “Why did I do that”? It’s a common thought for everyone and especially our young people.
This course will dive into why we do the things we do, the feelings that push out our behaviors and how knowing more about emotion literacy and secure attachment puts us back in the driver’s seat on making the best decisions. It’s all about helping our young people learn how to better manage their emotions in the moment.

<strong>Debby Jones is a Certified Prevention Specialist and the Prevention Director for Wasco County and YouthThink in the state of Oregon. She also serves as the counties Overdose Prevention Coordinator. Jones received her BS Degree from Brigham Young University. She currently serves as the Chair for the State of Oregon’s Addiction and Mental Health Planning and Advisory Council and the Vice-Chair of Oregon’s Alcohol and Other Drug Policy Commission. She is a Board Member of the 4 Rivers Early Learning Hub as well as the Oregon Coalition of Prevention Professionals and a member of the Northwest Prevention Technology Transfer Center’s Advisory Council. Jones is also an active member of Fairplay for Kids and their On-line Harms subcommittee. She is a certified QPR, and SAMHSA’s Prevention Core Competencies Instructor. <p style="">ODE releases reports on 2024 Summer Learning grants (HB 4082).  </p><p style="">In 2024 the Oregon Legislature provided $30 million for summer learning and a task force to plan for the future of after school and summer programs in Oregon.  The Oregon Department of Education coordinated the summer grants and the task force.  Attached are links to the just released reports on the outcomes.  The Implementation Analysis report provides detail about the process of delivering the summer grants, the Survey Report details the results of the student participants&#39; opinions about the programs.  It does not include the percentage of students who responded (26%).  The Final Report gives a summary of task force actions and recommendations.  It includes a recommendation to fund $50 million per year for summer school ($100 million for the biennium).
